SAMARITANS PAUSE

Scripture:
‘BUT A CERTAIN SAMARITAN, AS HE JOURNEYED, CAME WHERE HE WAS; AND WHEN HE SAW HIM, HE HAD COMPASSION ON HIM, AND WENT TO HIM,AND BOUND UP HIS WOUNDS, POURING OIL AND WINE, AND SET HIM ON HIS BEAST, AND BROUGHT HIM TO AN INN AND TOOK CARE OF HIM.’
(LUKE 10:33-34)

💊🧪🧫In Luke Chapter 10 is the well known story of the traveller who fell into the hands of robbers and was stripped, thoroughly beaten and left half dead.

💊🧪🧫Two religious leaders each passed by at different times, saw him but walked on by: unconcerned and undisturbed by his pathetic situation.

💊🧪🧫When later a Samaritan saw him, he paused his journey, got down from his horse and attended to him using his oil and wine as First Aid. He didn’t wait to hear a thunder clap or a voice roar from Heaven to tell him to save the dying man. He knew he had to.

💊🧪🧫And that’s how Samaritans are: they pause. They put their interest and agenda on hold to save the man that’s wounded. They have a conscience that’s alive and full of the milk of human compassion.

💊🧪🧫Sir/Ma, life is like the road from Jerusalem to Jericho on which the traveller was robbed and mercilessly beaten.

💊🧪🧫In life, you’ll come across many who have been beaten, battered and shattered by the storms and viscicitudes of life and have been seemingly left for dead. And when you do, you’ll have to decide whether to pause your journey to attend them or to walk away as most do.

💊🧪🧫Jesus regards the Samaritan’s compassionate acts as ” loving your neighbour as yourself”(Luke 10:36-37)

💊🧪🧫Foremost among those God expects you to pause your journey, lift up and show neighbourly love is your Spouse.

💊🧪🧫In Marriage, there should be daily demonstrations of neighbourly love.

💊🧪🧫When your Mate is overtaken by a fault, mistake, ignorance, some weakness in his character, etc, don’t just walk away or worse still, play the Judge and increase their pains. Rather, pause what you’re doing and go near; and give them attention. And if they need restoration, compassionately help them back to their feet(Galatians 6:1).

💊🧪🧫Every Spouse is a Samaritan stationed in their Mate’s life. See yourself as such.

💊🧪🧫Whenever your Mate fails in way or another, reach out a hand to lift them up rather than stretching out a fist of fury to hit them in anger as many do.

💊🧪🧫Love also means putting yourself in the shoes of your partner by thoughts or action to know how they feel and to be able to show empathy and mercy more adequately.

💊🧪🧫Spouses become critical and judgemental when they don’t try on the shoes of their Mate. Appreciate your partner rather than criticize them.

💊🧪🧫Love is never critical, picky or a faultfinder. Rather it is an encourager, a builder and a lifter.

💊🧪🧫Of course, love will have to tell the bitter truth when necessary but it must be done prayerfully, with much love and at the right time.

💊🧪🧫The Scripture tells us: “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind , meekness, long-suffering…
And above all things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”(Colossians 3:12,14)

💊🧪🧫So, as Christian Couples, we are called in marriage to do so much more than kissing and embracing each other. We are to be “The Samaritan” to each other. We are to minister to each other in moments of injury, pains and tears and not increase the troubles of our partner by playing the devil’s advocate.
