LOVEBIRDS' DEVOTIONAL

Enriching Matrimonies

SPOUSES, BE THANKFUL!

Scripture:
‘I AM NOT WORTHY OF THE LEAST OF ALL THE MERCIES, AND ALL THE TRUTH, WHICH THOU HAST SHEWED UNTO THY SERVANT; FOR WITH MY STAFF I PASSED OVER THIS JORDAN; AND NOW I AM BECOME TWO BANDS.’
(GENESIS 32:10)

AT A VERY CRITICAL TIME in his life when Jacob, a husband and a father, was greatly terrified, he stopped and prayed.

However, he didn’t storm God’s gate with loud knocks and hoarse petitions. No. He began with gratitude. And that’s what we see in our anchor scripture for today.

Yes, he had troubles but ever before he mentioned them, he first expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for how He had exalted him in life.

He recalled how he passed over River Jordan twenty years earlier with nothing but a walking stick in his hand. No extra shirt in a bag and no penny to his name. But he was a Billionaire in just six years! It was supernatural and extraordinary and he knew it.

Sir/Ma, do you ever look back and take stock of how far God has brought you in life?

Truth is: Jacob didn’t receive any exceptional treatment from God that we don’t. We are all recipients of God’s blessings handed down daily to us with His big and mighty hands. But the question is: are we grateful? Are we thankful and appreciative?

From your wedding day till now, God has graciously blessed you and your Spouse in thousands, if not millions, of ways.

Perhaps, you are complaining that God has not blessed you with a child after many years of marriage. But do you know that there are many who haven’t yet married even though they’re older than you?

Oh, you feel that your home is embarrassing to you and your family because it isn’t as tastefully furnished as you desire. But do you know that there are people who have no home talk less of furnishings?

We have much to learn from Jacob’s prayer that is our anchor scripture for today. He confessed that he was UNWORTHY of any of the things that God had mercifully blessed him with. He left home desirous of marrying one wife but now had four. Instead of complaining that he had been forced into polygamy, he saw providence in it and rightly counted it a blessing; which it indeed was.

In his prayer, he didn’t recount the mistreatment he suffered in the service of Mr. Laban.

Similarly, learn to focus on God’s kindness, mercy, compassion, upliftment and promotions in your life.

Sir/Ma, if God were to put you exactly where you deserve to be, you won’t be
anywhere near where you are today. Who knows if you might have been languishing in some prison now, if not for God?

One of the undoings of the children of Israel was their ingratitude. As the scripture says:

“Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.”(1 Corinthians 10:10)

In their ingratitude, they forgot all the mighty works God did to bring them out of Egypt. They forgot the great and awesome demonstration of God’s power by which they crossed the Red Sea. Infact, all they could remember was their small irritations. And they murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer!

Sir/Ma, be thankful!

Bless God and praise Him for all his doings in your marriage, home and family and you will see more of God’s joy, peace and harmony in your home!
