HAVE YOU EVER READ THE STORY OF a couple who angrily went to court seeking the dissolution of their Marriage? Well, may be you haven’t but I’ve read several of them.

They’d stand, each of them stern faced, determined to have their union of twenty years or more, suddenly and carelessly dissolved. And when asked their reason. The answer most give is so simplistic if not outrightly sheepish: “We no longer love each other.”

You’ve lived together for twenty years, born and bred four lively children and you’re prepared to throw everything away just because you now FEEL that “you no longer love each other”?

Spouses, please listen.

LOVE is so much more than good feelings, even though it’s also true that Love brings about “good feelings.”
However, it’s important for you to understand that in Marriage, very many times, the feelings of love won’t be there unless you make conscious efforts to generate them.

But here’s one important secret I want to leave with you and if you forget everything you’ll read in this Devotional, never forget that truth and it’s this: so long as there’s a heart beating in your chest, you can fall in love again and again with your Spouse.

LOVE is comparable to the Sun. Most of the time, the Sun shines bright and unmistakably in the sky, so much so that even the blind could “see it” by the warmth it places on their skin. But there are also days that the Sun is indeed in the sky but you neither see nor feel it because it’s fully covered by thick clouds. But you’ll be foolish to conclude that because you can’t see or feel the Sun, something strange has happened to it and it’s forever lost.

Similarly, there are times in Marriage when it feels that your Spouse is a mistake and you shouldn’t have ventured into the relationship that led to your courtship and eventual Marriage. There’ll come times when it would seem that your Mate is the most dumb soul you’ve ever come across in your entire life; and then you switch over to selfblame for allowing yourself to have been carried away by the wind of sentiments and the folly of youth. But do you know what, Dearie? At such moments it’s not your Spouse that’s wrong and badly in need of prayer and supplication but YOU! You’ve become numb and irrational. You need to pause and think soberly so you don’t take a step that you’ll deeply regret for the rest of your life.

When you feel discontented with your Marriage, the solution isn’t in seeking a divorce. It’s to renew your love and romance and you’ll do well to be the one to bravely initiate it and do your best to sustain it.

So, how do you start? Let me give you a clue.

Supposing, just supposing, you get the divorce the devil has been drumming in your ears for months and you met a handsome bloke or beautiful babe that meets your fancy, chances are that your heart would begin dancing towards them, right? You’d find yourself falling in love with them, okay? It’s your HEART that’s at work. Meanwhile, you barely know the man or woman, yet you’re already gravitating towards them and even praying for divine favour to find acceptance in their sight.

Sir/Ma, if you have the capacity to fall in love with a new person, you already have all it takes to fall in love with your Spouse ANEW!

When a day turns out dull and dreary because the Sun is beclouded, you don’t turn suicidal and rant that you’ll kill yourself because you neither see nor feel the Sun. You instead wait for it. So also in Marriage. When it feels like your union isn’t making sense, look away from the “clouds”. Be positive, stand strong and you’ll see and experience a great marital turnaround.

Finally, emulate the Spouse who spoke the words of our anchor scripture for today. Choose to see only good and glory in your mate. Always stay on the sunny side of the life of your Spouse!!!
