DOCTOR HOWARD HENDRICKS SURVEYED 246 MEN WHO WERE in the Ministry and fell into Adultery within a two year period. One of his findings was that none of them ever believed that they could ever fall into infidelity. They were each convinced and so sure of themselves that they were too strong spiritually to fall into extramarital affairs until it happened to them.
Dearly Beloved, God’s Word warns us in strong terms against being overconfident:
“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”(1 Corinthians 10:12)
It’s great to be happily married💍💍💍. It’s wonderful to have a wellknit family and a sweet home🏠🏠🏠. All these are marks of standing.
You’re a well respected Preacher🎙🎤 with a robust Ministry that’s enjoying influence and affluence💰💰💰. These are marks of standing.
But our anchor scripture tells us that the man who is standing should not relax yet. He must be cautious. He must take heed; he must watch against the possibility of falling into Adultery.
Taking heed against falling into Adultery is one of your duties in Marriage. There must at all times be in you the consciousness to keep far from anything that could cause you a moral slip.
Your question at this point may be: “How does one take heed?” Here are some guidelines.
(1) RECKON YOURSELF DEAD TO SIN
Live a daily life that’s rooted in the finished work of Christ and the marvelous transformation it has accomplished in your life. It has made you dead to Sin and alive to God(Romans 6:1-11).
(2) AMASS SPIRITUAL STRENGTH THROUGH DAILY PERSONAL WALK WITH GOD
A daily close walk with God by a personal time of prayer, worship and feeding on the word will fortify you to withstand any satanic hurricane of immorality(Ephesians 6:10; Matthew 4:4; Proverbs 24:10)
(3) LIVE IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S MATRIMONIAL LAWS
God has given Laws that govern the married life(Ephesians 5: 22-33). Obedience to them make your union strong. To protect you against Adultery, those laws demand you and your Spouse to minister sexual intimacy to each other constantly and consistently in marriage(1 Corinthians 7:2-5). Obey them and be protected from Adultery and all it’s deadly and disgraceful consequences.
(4) AVOID CLOSENESS WITH THE OPPOSITE SEX!!!
Avoid undue closeness with anybody of the opposite Sex that’s neither your spouse nor your blood relation. Flee from all such as soon as you’re done with whatever legitimate business brought you. (1 Corinthians 6:18)
