In the December 25th devotional, we saw one of the most unlikely couples in the line up of the hundreds of couples through whom Jesus Christ our Lord descended. That couple is Salmon and Rehab, the Harlot.
Today, we are looking at yet another and they’re Mr Boaz and his wife, Ruth, the Moabitess.
Ruth the Moabitess, was apparently not a Jewess. She was a descendant of Moab, the Son of the first daughter of Lot which she conceived through an incestuous relationship with her own father, Mr. Lot. Can you imagine a woman from such a background finding her way into the genealogy of the Son of the Most High, Jesus Christ the Messiah? Yet it happened because with God there is no partiality neither respect of persons (Acts 10:34).
Ruth came into Israel through a rather painful and tearful circumstances that included the painful deaths of her father in-law, her husband and her husband’s brother. In the face of these negative situation, she chose to cleave to her Mother-in-law, Naomi as Naomi returned to Israel, empty-handed and in seeming disgrace.
Through Naomi’s counsel she got married to Boaz and the marriage surprisingly produced the star of Boaz family. Apparently Boaz must have had other children long before he married Ruth. But the providence of God made Ruth’s Son, Jesse the foremost Son of Boaz. Jesse grew up and had seven sons the youngest of whom was David, who became Israel’s greatest King!
When Ruth came into Israel everything looked bleak and hopeless for her and her Mother-in-law Naomi. Nothing indicated that she’d marry in Israel, let alone produce an eminent son through whom a King would be born. Not even Boaz had any such expectations.
So what’s our lesson? It’s that: God can make the weakest of marriages grow, wax strong and become a monumental source of blessings to millions.
The marriage of Ruth and Boaz produced David, who wrote most of the Book of Psalms; a Book that has blessed billions of lives and still blessing billions even right now.
Are people looking down on your marriage today? Does it seem that you married too late? Is your home seemingly steeped in poverty and you seem to be endlessly struggling? Are people laughing at you because they feel you married a man/woman that’s way too old and too “antique” for your age? Don’t answer whatever “trash” or negative words they’re throwing at you. Cleave to your Spouse. Obey God’s Word and commandments on Marriage and the providence of God will back you up and speak for you just like it did for Ruth and Boaz.
