IN MARRIAGE, THE POSITION OF THE HUSBAND as Head of the Wife is to be carried out by closely emulating Christ, the Head of the Church.
In 1 Peter 2: 25, Christ is referred to as the Bishop of our Souls.
“For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.”
As a husband therefore, you are called to function as Bishop in the home. Biblically, a Bishop is a Superintendent, an Overseer; whose duty is to give a loving and caring oversight to the flock of God.
God demands of Bishops that they do not constitute themselves into LORDS over His flock but be exemplary leaders who walk in the footsteps of Christ:
“Feed the flock of God which is among you, TAKING THE OVERSIGHT THEREOF, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
NEITHER AS BEING LORDS OVER GOD’S HERITAGE, but being examples to the flock.”(1 Peter 5:2-3)
So as a Husband, you are to nourish your Wife and also function as an Overseer and Superintendent in her life. Now, how do you serve as Overseer and Superintendent?
To understand your duties as Superintendent and Overseer is simple. Just look at the roles of the Principal in a Secondary School and you’ll be okay.
The Principal is an Overseer and Superintendent in the education sector.
His duty is to see to the smooth running of the School. He is to coordinate the staff, both Teaching and Non Teaching and ensure that learning goes on undisrupted and that the students welfare is taken care of. He leaves the teachers to carry out their duties. He doesn’t step into classes to find out how much chalk teachers are using and if they cain students. He is not to pokenose into details that are meant for the Form Teachers, the Games Masters to handle. He must believe in the competence of the Food Master to take of the Kitchen Staff and the feeding of the Students. He steps in only when things go wrong. Similarly, a husband must know that his Wife was posted by God into his life with numerous and diverse abilities, gifts and skills that he must give her all the freedom she needs to exercise them. He is not to interrupt in her precincts. For instance, the Kitchen is strictly the wife’s domain. It’s not the husband’s role to be often in the Kitchen to know how many pieces of meat are remaining in the newly cooked stew or how she has used the packet of Salt she bought last week. No!
When you look at the Bible’s most eulogized housewife whose glorious deeds are recorded in Proverbs chapter 31, you’ll see that her husband was an Overseer and a Superintendent indeed. He gave her so much liberty and as a result she was able to demonstrate her resourcefulness to the glory of God and for the benefit of her husband and children. Through her thrift, initiatives and investments so much wealth came into their home.
So, Husband recognize the manner of Headship you’ve been called to carry out in marriage and function in it. Give your Wife all the free hand and support she needs to use her abilities. Your family will be better off for it.
