WHEN GOD WANTED AN ARK BUILT, He gave Noah very clear INSTRUCTIONS on the kind of wood to use, the exact measurements of the length, height and width of the peculiar edifice. Quite strangely, it was to have only one door and one window; and the lone window was to be on the roof! Noah had never built such a structure before. Some of the specifications were, humanly speaking, odd. But Noah didn’t ask questions. He didn’t argue. He went on and built according to God’s INSTRUCTIONS and the Ark turned out to be a most magnificent masterpiece! And even more importantly, that Ark became a “House of Refuge” to Noah and his family as the entire world perished in chilling cold outside of it!
When God wanted a Tabernacle built for Him in the wilderness, He gave Moses very clear INSTRUCTIONS about the design or pattern for it’s construction, as well as how the materials for the project were to be sourced for. Moses obeyed. And the outcome was a splendid tabernacle that lasted hundreds of years.
When it comes to Marriage, God has INSTRUCTIONS for you and your Spouse. The INSTRUCTIONS are in His Word, the Bible. They’ll furnish you with EVERY INFORMATION AND GUIDANCE you need to live a happy, fulfilling and satisfying matrimonial life. Below is a summary of God’s INSTRUCTIONS for living a successful married life. Don’t argue with it. Just walk in the footsteps of Noah and Moses and “foolishly” obey them and you’ll discover God’s wisdom for enjoying a sweet union that will be a happy outpost of Heaven on Earth.
1) LEAVE ALL OTHERS AND CLEAVE TO YOUR SPOUSE
Genesis 2: 24 The call to leave Father and Mother is a generalized call to deprioritize your primary and secondary relationships in life and CLEAVE TO YOUR SPOUSE. Cleave to them physically, mentally and emotionally. Don’t allow any GAP between you.
(2) WIFE SUBMIT TO YOUR HUSBAND
Ephesians 5:23-24
Don’t misunderstand this command. It’s not a call to timidity and subservience. No. It simply means: obey your husband and defer to authority, when he’s right. If you promptly obey the young Doctor’s instructions to undress for pelvic exam during pregnancy because you know that it’s right, then you should also promptly obey your husband’s voice at home when he’s right.
(3) HUSBAND LOVE YOUR WIFE SUPREMELY AS CHRIST LOVES THE CHURCH
Ephesians 5: 25-29
Husband, you’re commanded to love your wife supremely as Christ loved the Church and died for her. It simply means: be willing to go to any length to meet the needs in the life of your wife.
Love her as naturally, as intensely and as consistently as you love your physical body.
(4) BE A ROMANTIC COUPLE
Proverbs 5: 18-19;
Song of Solomon 1:2
Make your marriage a love affair. Let kissing, embracing , hugging, caressing, smooching, cuddling, etc, be unfading features of your relationship. Never believe that you’re too old to do any of these things.
(5) RECOGNIZE SEXUAL INTIMACY AS A SERVICE YOU’RE CALLED RENDER TO EACH OTHER.
1 Corinthians 7: 2- 5; Proverbs 5: 1-15
One of the major reasons marriages are failing is the wrong mentality of some Spouses about Sex. They see it as an undeserved gift they’re giving to their Partner. Such Spouses would, for instance, say: “I helped you yesterday and you’re coming again today. My friend, go back. I can’t be giving you everytime. You think I’m a Harlot?” To such ignorant Spouses, Sex is an unmerited favour they’re doing they’re Mate.
But 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 makes it clear that Sexual intimacy with your husband or wife is YOUR OBLIGATION, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND YOUR DUTY IN MARRIAGE. IT’S A DEBT YOU CONTINUALLY OWE YOUR SPOUSE IN MARRIAGE! YOUR SPOUSE HAS NO BUSINESS BEGGING YOU FOR IT; BECAUSE IT’S ONE OF THEIR MOST BASIC RIGHTS IN MARRIAGE.
IT’S YOUR WORK IN MARRIAGE.
YOU’RE DEMANDED TO FAITHFULLY FULFILL IT ALWAYS; EXCEPT WHEN YOU AND YOUR MATE HAVE MUTUALLY AGREED TO AVOID IT FOR THE SAKE OF PRAYER AND FASTING.
(6) HAVE FERVENT LOVE AMONGST YOURSELVES
1 Peter 4: 8
As human beings, you and your mate are imperfect; and so you’ll make mistakes or even sin.
That is why you need to have the Love of God burning in your hearts always. It will help you to forgive each other’s wrongs. It will help you accommodate one another’s weaknesses as God works continually in transforming you.
