The same night the Philippian jailor got saved, he set out to do the unthinkable. He wanted to wash the wounds of Paul and Silas and to also feed them. And so he set out for his home with the two august visitors in the dead of the night.
What gave him the confidence to proceed home with these great men of God? The character of his wife!
He knew her: that she was a submissive woman and would receive the visitors with warmth and love, even though he was bringing them home at an ungodly hour.
There are men who are highly placed, live in a big and well furnished home, drive big and posh jeep but dare not bring visitors home at will. Why? Because their wife is easily provoked at the sight of guests. She sees visitors as vermins and riffraffs who should stay in their houses and not give her extra cooking work. And she’s not afraid or ashamed to say it out loud, “My home is not a hostel or a hotel. When people are coming to town, they should plan for themselves.”
And so her husband is careful with bringing visitors home including close relatives because of her allergy and hostility towards guests.
But not the Philippian jailor’s wife!
Her husband wasn’t a high ranking city official but she knew the essence of a home and the duties of a wife. She knew that the home isn’t only for the immediate family and a wife isn’t to care only for her own but as for many as it pleases God to bring under her roof.
Remember that Paul and Silas prayed and sang at midnight and God sent an earthquake rumbling down. It means that the Jailor took the two preachers to his home, probably around 1:30 am.
The wife of the Jailor didn’t expect prisoners to be brought home but she knew that her place was to support the good initiatives of her husband.
When her husband asked her to get everybody to wake up and hear God’s Word she willingly cooperated instead of opposing and asking questions. Consequently, the entire family got saved and baptized that same night.
The wife boiled water for her husband to wash the wounds of the two preachers.
She went into her kitchen when her husband told her to get the men something to eat since they’d eaten neither lunch nor supper the previous day. Soon she was out of the kitchen with a steamy and sumptuous meal; served in glorious dishes and presented with humility and respect to the two hungry men .
Every wife can learn the godly art of wifely submission from the spouse of the Philippian jailor.
Without any prior notice she made her home a haven of rest and renewal to Apostles Paul and Silas.
Submission makes you beautiful and unforgettable. No doubt, Paul and Silas had a good impression of the Jailor’s Wife. And by the time the Philippian Church had grown and Paul visited during his circuit of preaching and oversight of the Churches, the Jailor’s Wife was never ashamed to meet him. Just imagine if she had refused to receive them that night on the excuse that her husband brought the guests for her to feed in the dead of the night?
Your submission and hospitality today will speak for you tomorrow.
