π°ππAs noted in one of recent devotionals, Marriage brings men and women into the deepest and closest level of relationship in which it’s only natural for them to show neighbourly love to each other.
π°ππChrist presented the story of the Good Samaritan as an example of how people ought to show love to others constantly. It’s to teach us that even the stranger whom we’ve never before met but whom providence makes to cross our path is a neighbour; and God demands that we demonstrate full love towards them.
π°ππIf God expects and demands that we love strangers, how much more our dear Spouse with whom we have a lifelong covenant of Love?
π°ππIn our anchor scripture for today, we can see the magnanimity and large heartedness of the Samaritan.
π°ππWho was he really? How come he was such a good man? Well, the Good Samaritan was a descendant of the Pagans and the Jews who dwelled in Samaria during the long years of the captivities. These people practiced a religion that was blend of Judaism and paganism. Spiritually and doctrinally they were in grave error but behold one of them has in the story of Christ demonstrated that it’s not a matter of knowing all the true doctrines of Scripture but living a life that conforms with God’s commandments, especially His commandments on the love of fellowman and God.
π°ππThe Scripture says: “For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified”(Romans 2:13)
π°ππWhere the Priest and the Levite woefully failed, behold the Samaritan shined illustriously. He demonstrated that he had a working conscience and that his internal moral compass was functioning. He showed that he had a heart that reverenced and feared God; and feelings that was sensitive to the misfortune for his fellow man.
π°ππIn Marriage, Spouses must walk in the footsteps of this man who walked in the fear of God and love for fellow man by going out of their way to practically strengthen, help, save, assist and encourage each other as needs arise.
π°ππWe’ll now zero in on our core lesson for today and it’s on how the Samaritan freely opened his Purse to the stranger he had never in his entire life.
π°ππTo have brought out the dying man on his horse to the safety of a city was a praiseworthy and laudable deed indeed. Some would leave the man under some tree shade and tell him to try find his way back home to his family. But not this Samaritan. He had a loftier idea. He was minded to lodge with the wounded man in a clean, colourful and comfortable Hotel and did so. What was his intention? He wanted to take care of him(Luke 10:34).
π°ππAnd on the next day, as our anchor scripture tells us, he paid the Hotel owner two pence which was in those days two days wages for a Labourer! So he handsomely paid the Hotelier and instructed him to: “Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again I will repay thee”(Luke 10:35c)
π°ππHe didn’t want the man dismissed or sent out of the Hotel because he was leaving. He arranged for him to stay on and be nourished and cared for; all at his expense. What a lesson!
π°ππSpouses, please, go beyond the mere names of Husband and Wife!
π°ππBegin to live and practice the love of God and fellowman in your marriage! Enough of being an Angel to others outside and a devil to your Spouse at home.
π°ππHusband, be eagerly willing to spend freely on the needs of your dear wife and wife stop believing that it’s the husband alone that should generate money and spend on the family. God placed you in his life to be a financial helper too. So, open your purse and make money available when the family needs it.
π°ππGod is watching us every second. Let’s live in such a way that He finds our life conformable to the life of His Son Jesus Christ Who freely gave us His life on the Cross.
π°ππLet your attitude and conduct as you live with your Spouse mirror the extravagant love of Jesus Christ. Amen!
