THE SHUNAMITE COUPLE

Scripture:
‘And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.’
(2 KINGS 4:8b)

🍼🍼Most of the time, we talk of the Shunamite Woman but today, we’re going to talk about the Shunamite Couple. Why? Because there are valuable lessons all married couples can learn from their lives and marriage.

🍼🍼The Shunamite Woman saw Prophet Elisha in her city. She knew that he was a Holy Man of God and so invited him into her home for a meal.

🍼🍼When Prophet Elisha declined her invitation, she humbly persisted. Her godly attitude of hospitality made the Prophet accept to come into her home for a meal. And from that day forward, she made herself his happy Hostess; always welcoming him and his servant into her home for a hearty meal.

🍼🍼Now, what are our lessons? Here are some:

🍼🍼(1) Lesson 1: She Didn’t Wear Her Troubles!

Our first lesson, from this passage is that the Shunamite Woman didn’t wear her troubles of barrenness and childlessness.

Compared to Hannah, she had a different attitude. Hannah said of herself:
“I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit”(1 Samuel 1:15a). Perhaps, Hannah’s childlessness was made more painful by the unrelenting taunts of her rival, Peninah.
But we see in the Shunamite a calm and undisturbed woman, whose heart wasn’t filled with her challenge of barrenness. Instead, she had a joyful spirit that overflowed in the willingness to host and serve others.

🍼🍼(2) Lesson 2: Her Heart Was Not Full Of Her Troubles

The Scripture says that out of the the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

She hosted Israel’s greatest Prophet for months, perhaps for years, and never once did she open her lips to tell him that she was childless.

In fact, the Prophet didn’t even know because she was never carrying a long face. Never once did he meet her sitting still with her head bowed. She was always cheerful and in good spirits. On the day the Prophet knew, it was his servant, Gehazi, who brought it to his attention.
What an amazing woman!

🍼🍼(3) Lesson Three: Her Husband Happily Lived With Her!

Her husband was contented with her. He definitely was a man who had divine understanding and knew that it’s God that gives children; and that when He has closed a woman’s womb, it’s wrong to crucify her. It’s also possible that he understood that a marriage mustn’t become sour just because there are no children. He loved his wife and cleaved to her. To him polygamy was absolutely uncalled for!

What a couple!

🍼🍼In conclusion let’s say this:
🍼Don’t Wear Your Troubles As A Uniform. It’s Unnecessary.
🍼🍼Don’t Allow Your Challenge Fill And Occupy Your Heart. Instead, Enthrone God In Your Heart!
🍼🍼Marriage Doesn’t Need Children To Be Successful. Husband Don’t Crucify Your Wife! Wait For The Time Of God.
