Today, we’ll still be looking at the Shunamite Couple.
What new lessons can we learn from their Marriage? Here are some:
(1) They Were United And Of One Voice.
When the wife suggested, as we can see in our anchor scripture verse, that they build a “Guest House” for the Prophet, the husband didn’t raise any objection. As a matter of fact, he didn’t think about it twice. He was completely for the Idea. Doesn’t that show how like-minded they were as a couple? Isn’t that how it should be between Spouses who profess to know the Lord? Read:
“Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”(Philippians 2:2)
(2) Her Husband Gave Her A Free Hand In The Home
This point becomes more noteworthy and praiseworthy when we consider the fact that they were in Israel, a patriarchal society where husbands held primary power and authority; and were the practical rulers of the home domain.
But what do we see in the Marriage of the Shunamite Couple? The husband gave her a free hand in the home.
She didn’t have to consult him to obtain some “clearance” before inviting Prophet Elisha for a meal. She knew her husband well enough to know that he’d approve her hospitality.
(3) Her Husband Wasn’t Suspicious Of Her
The Shunamite Woman, like the Virtuous Woman of Proverbs 31, was a lady who had earned her husband’s respect in the area of morality and chastity.
It’s said of the Virtuous Woman that her husband’s heart completely trusted in her(Proverbs 31:11). So also was the husband of Shunamite Woman.
Dear Housewife, have you earned your husbands trust? Or is he fearful and distrustful when you’re outside the home and in the company of men? If it’s so, then you need to work on proving to him that you’re chaste.
In conclusion, we say:
(1) Husband and Wife, endeavour to be always united and of one voice.
(2) Husband, give your wife a free hand in the home.
(3) Housewife, if for some reasons, your husband doesn’t trust you morally, then you need to work on earning his trust and confidence.
Prove to him that you’re not a loose woman.
