THE STORY OF NABAL AND ABIGAIL

Scripture:
‘THE LORD KILLETH AND MAKETH ALIVE’
(1 SAMUEL 2: 6A)

PERHAPS, YOU’RE IN A MARRIAGE WHERE you are the Partner that has the enthusiasm and keenness for your union to be the kind of marriage God instituted long ago in Eden: full of joy, oneness and endless romantic thrills but your Mate is the exact opposite who seems to have freely handed themselves over to the devil to use in making the union “A House of Sorrow”. If that’s your situation, please don’t be dismayed. Such marriages aren’t new.
An example of such a marriage in the Bible is that of Nabal and Abigail. Let’s look at their story:
“Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.”(1 Samuel 25:3)
According to the verse immediately above, Nabal and Abigail were husband and wife. Abigail was not only VERY BEAUTIFUL but had A VERY GOOD CHARACTER!

When you read further in 1 Samuel 25, you’ll see that she was indeed a wise, discreet and virtuous woman. But from what we’re told in 1 Samuel 25:3 above, Nabal was CHURLISH and evil in his doings.
To be Churlish is to be ill-mannered, rude, ill-tempered and beastly. When you read further in 1 Samuel 25, you’ll confirm that indeed Nabal was truly ill-mannered, uncouth and beastly. And of course, the first recipient and victim of his wicked behaviour, as any rational thinker would expect, was his innocent and pretty wife. She must have had so much to endure living with that mean and intemperate man.
But despite his evil doings, Abigail remained a faithful and committed wife to him. She didn’t allow his base character influence her. She maintained her integrity.

Sadly, Nabal continued with his bad behaviour until he embarrassed David, the future King of Israel. He uttered unprintable things about David, the Anointed Servant of God. That singular act sealed his fate as God struck him dead soon after and swiftly gave his beautiful wife, Abigail, to David. Just imagine Nabal in Hell and seeing pretty Abigail in bed with David! That would have doubled his torments!

What lesson can we learn from the Nabal and Abigail story? It’s that our behaviour in marriage and life in general count. God is keenly watching every couple. If any Spouse constitute themselves into an oppressor to make life painful, miserable and full of tears for their Mate, God is watching and will not fail to step in at the right time to do the needful.

In Genesis 38, we have the account of two brothers whom God killed because of their misbehaviour towards their wife. Please read:
“6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
7 And Er, Judah’s firstborn, WAS WICKED in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, WHEN HE WENT IN UNTO HIS BROTHER’S WIFE, THAT HE SPILLED IT ON THE GROUND, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.”(Genesis 38: 6-10)
In the six verses of the Bible immediately above, we see how God’s judgement came upon Er and Onan, the two grandsons of Jacob because of their ungodly sexual behaviour in marriage. Studies show that Er would not have normal and natural Sex with his wife but preferred Anal Sex or Sodomy. Therefore, God killed him. His younger brother, Onan, whom their father told to marry the woman chose to always spill his seed of copulation on the ground during sexual intimacy instead of letting them flow into the woman as it’s natural to do. This was wickedness in the sight of God and GOD KILLED HIM ALSO!

For those who treat their husband or wife like trash, it’s time to STOP because God is fully aware of all you’re doing. Hear what the Bible says about God:
“The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.”(1 Samuel 2: 6)

God holds the power of Judgement to mete out DEATH to those whose ungodly conduct in marriage deserve His judgmental visitation. Therefore, BEWARE!!!
