FALLING IN LOVE IS ONE OF THE easiest things. Easy and simple as it is, yet it’s what brings a man and a woman together to become One-Flesh and to bring forth a whole new generation.
However, what will make a marriage consistently and INCREASINGLY THRILLING is the ability as well as the efforts of the couple to STAY IN LOVE AND GROW IN LOVE. The absence of these has been the great undoing of many marriages that eventually collapsed.
Falling in love is easy but staying in love calls for conscious, deliberate and committed efforts by the two spouses to do all and everything they’re required by God’s commandments on Marriage. Let’s run through the list of some of the things you need to do to stay in love, grow in love and to enjoy an increasingly thrilling marriage.
1)LEAVE OTHER RELATIONSHIPS(Genesis 2:24a) The command to leave Father and Mother isn’t something you obey only at the onset of marriage. Besides , this command also requires you leaving other relationships too. It calls on you to deprioritize all other relationships and make your relationship with your spouse the second most important relationship in your life. The first and most important relationship in your life is the one you have with God and the next is your relationship with your spouse.

2) CLEAVE FIRMLY TO YOUR SPOUSE (Genesis 2: 24b) Many think this is something figurative. No; t’s very practical. It’s something you need to do EVERYDAY. It means: attach yourself to; glue, adhere and stick firmly to your husband or wife. You do this in three ways: mentally, romantically and sexually.
MENTAL CLEAVING: You must keep your partner on your mind because infidelity first begins with the mind wondering away. So, you keep your spouse in your thoughts by having practical tokens with you as reminder of them. Keep a picture of them on your desk in the office. Have their picture as your phone, laptop and computer screensaver. Have a picture of them in your Bible. And if you’re audacious enough, place a beautiful picture of them on the front screen of your car or jeep to loudly announce your love and fidelity!
ROMANTIC CLEAVING: Religiously and spontaneously observe hugging, embracing, kissing, petting, necking, fondling, caressing, smooching and cuddling in your marriage. Some think these things are foreign practices from Europe and America and so are optional. Sir/Ma, they’re not! They belong to The Marriage Kingdom! Practicing them daily keep you freshly in love in love with each other; and help you grow in your affection and passion for one another as married lovers.
SEXUAL CLEAVING: This is the most fundamental form of cleaving. Many see sexual intimacy as something to be had on special occasions such as when “something good” has happened in the family. Beloved, if you’re going to stay in love and grow in love as a couple, you must see Sexual Intimacy exactly as God the Creator sees it, call it what He calls it and use it exactly as He created it to be used. What does God call Sexual Intimacy? Let’s look at the Scripture:
“DRINK WATERS out of thine own cistern, and RUNNING WATERS out of thine own well.” (Proverbs 5: 15). God calls sexual intimacy WATER. It’s to be drunk and that’s why that verse begins by saying: “DRINK WATERS”. How many times do you drink ordinary water in one day? You don’t even know because you don’t keep count. Nobody does. You drink water as often as you experience THIRST. This is also how you should have sex in your marriage: when ever one of you is thirsty for it.
When you observe all these forms of CLEAVING, you’ll remain in love and keep growing in love with each other.
3) RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER AND ACCORD DESERVED DUES (Genesis 2: 23; Romans 13:7)
When Adam first beheld Eve, he recognized her as the flesh of his flesh and the bone of his bones; and as someone created out of him. He spoke pleasantly to her.
When a Governor walks into a gathering without prior notification he is instantly led to the front seat as everybody stands up and he’s openly accorded RECOGNITION AND HONOUR and thereafter the occasion continues.
Similarly, recognize the position of your spouse in your life and promptly accord them their due respect.
Husband, recognize that your wife is your flesh and bone. Never maltreat her because you never maltreat your head, hands or eyes. Remember that your wife is a female gender and even in their father’s houses girls are spared harsh treatment and punishments. And now that she lives with you as full-grown woman, it’s a great shame on your part for you to raise your hand and beat her! Or worse still to beat her with a belt or fight her! The man who does so is a disgrace to manhood.
Similarly, the Wife should recognize her husband for who he is in the marriage union. He is your HEAD. You’re required to submit to his authority and to deeply respect him (Ephesians 5:23-24; 33). You’re to LOVE HIM (Titus 2:4).
