IN OUR ANCHOR SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY, we can see how the man spoke to his lady, even though he was under pressure as it was drizzling outside where he stood. His thinking, behaviour and words were unaffected by the circumstances around him. He was a Lover and chose to speak as one despite the night dew falling on him.
Look at the sweet terms of endearment he used in addressing her, even though she certainly had a personal name. He called her: “My Sister, My Love, My Dove, My Undefiled.”
He could have just said: “Janet, please, get up and open this door. It’s drizzling and I’m wet. Hurry up!” He instead addressed her with courtesy, politeness and respect using four sweet names.
Let’s look at each of the four names:
1) “MY SISTER”
He was mindful of the fact that they were both members of the same spiritual family and children of the same God and so he called her, “MY SISTER”.
Always remember that your Spouse is your fellow Heavenly Pilgrim, a Saint in Christ and a cherished daughter/son of God. If you treat your Pastor, his wife and other members of your local Church with respect, you must not treat your Spouse any less.
2) “MY LOVE”
He saw her as his Dearest, Nearest, Sweetest, his Heartbeat; the Incomparable and Adorable one of his life. His affection was set on her and he used this name, “MY LOVE”, to address her. The name you call your Spouse matters. It’s not the best to call them something like: “Baba Tomato” or “Mama Carrot” because your daughter’s name is Tomato or your son’s name is Carrot. Call each other names that will stir your hearts and hands to feel like touching each other! Call each other names that would inspire you to respect each other.
3) “MY DOVE”
He called her “My Dove” because he esteemed her as peaceful, harmless, gentle, immaculate, innocent and a paragon of serenity.
Doves are monogamous birds that mate with one partner for life. In calling her “My Dove”, he was saying that she was an embodiment of Purity; and a dependable, trustworthy and reliable lover who’d never betray his love by going into infidelity as many unfortunately do today.
“My Dove” is a name that would inspire the person so called to live up to it. It’s such a sweet and well thought-out name!
4) “MY UNDEFILED”
To this man, his lady was faultless, excellent, complete and perfect. He chose to be completely oblivious to whatever blemishes of character there were in her life.
Spouses should learn from this man how to be blind to the imperfections in their Mate’s life.
Spouses, wake up! Stop dissecting each other and examining one another’s lives like a specimen. Not even Adam was faultless. Nor Eve. Neither are you! Enjoy each other now. Celebrate each other. Thoughtfully generate new and unique names with which to express your love, respect and affection for each other. Names that will inspire you to respect and esteem each other higher than ever!
Remember that God also calls us sweet names in Christ. We’re called “Sons of God”(1 John 3:1), “More Than Conqueror”(Romans 8:37), “Joint Heirs With Christ”(Romans 8:17). These names strengthen and energize us spiritually.
So, it matters what names you call each other in marriage. Call each other names that will boost your romantic and sexual lives as a couple.
