WHEN THE WIFE IS THE OLDER SPOUSE IN A MARRIAGE (PT. 2)

Scripture:
‘AND I GAVE THEE THY MASTER’S HOUSE, AND THY MASTER’S WIVES INTO THY BOSOM’
(2 SAMUEL 12:8a)

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•David, the man after God’s heart, stands out in Scripture, as one man who married older women and his marriage to each of them was peaceful and successful.

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•In our anchor scripture for today, God stated that he gave him the wives of his former Master, King Saul. This is proof that God approves of a man marrying an older woman. If it’s wrong, God would definitely not do it by giving David the Queens of King Saul.

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•For us to understand this matter better, let’s consider the following.

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•Firstly, King Saul reigned for 40 years(Acts 13:21 )and David took over from him and became the next King of Israel at the age of 30( 2 Samuel 5:4). This means that David was born when King Saul had reigned as King for 10 years already! We can safely conclude that Saul got married before becoming King. This means that his wives were fully matured adult women: some of whom he married before he became King, and others after he had ascended the throne. These were royal ladies whom David venerated and bow down to greet, when he served in King Saul’s palace as his special Musician.

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•But upon the death of Saul and David becoming King, God gave those big, beautiful and smooth skinned Queens to David who was apparently younger than them.

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•For you to understand that they were not merely placed in his custodial care as the new occupant of the palace but were fully his legitimate wives and that he slept with them, consider how God phrased His words through Nathan the Prophet:

“and I gave thee thy master’s house, and THY MASTER’S WIVES INTO THY BOSOM”(2 Samuel 12: 8a).
The part of the verse that’s in capital letters shows that God gave David those women as his full fledged wives whom he freely slept with. For a young man like David who was once a mere Harpist for King Saul, this was divine honour at it’s peak!

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•Note that all these women, as well as Abigail, who was his first older wife, were fully submissive to him. This proves that an older lady that’s married to a younger man isn’t necessarily inclined to be unruly, contentious and unsubmissive to her husband. Most of the time, the opposite is the case, just as in the life of David; because such women come into marriage with a matured and sober mindset.

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•Now, isn’t it ironic that among David’s wives, the one that despised him and openly scorned and derided him was Michal, his first wife?(2 Samuel 6:20). Apparently, she must have been younger than David. So, a younger wife doesn’t necessarily guarantee obedience and submission.

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•Now, are we saying that all men should henceforth marry only older women? No, no, no!!! Far from it!

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•Our point is that Marriages where the wife is older than the husband are proper and God-approved unions. Such Spouses shouldn’t let negative perceptions and reactions by the society make them feel uncomfortable. What really matters is divine approval and they already have it!

πŸŽˆπŸŽ‚πŸ’•Finally, wives in such marriages should walk in the footsteps of Abigail and the ex-Queens of Saul, who were submissive to David their husband even though he was clearly younger. They never let their rich backgrounds make them haughty and proud towards David. Emulate them and you’ll enjoy a blissful marriage. Never make Michal’s mistake by correcting your husband in the public. It’s foolishness!

“Promotion at the workplace, government appointments, a litany of Awards and titles; connection with the movers and shakers in the society, etc, must never make you disrespectful and haughty towards your husband who married you and whose name you bear.”(Anselm Ahman.
