๐๐๐Long ago, as a young believer, I heard the story of a Christian husband whom I will call “Mr. X” in this devotional piece.
๐๐๐WIFE TURNED TORMENTOR
“Mr. X” and his wife got married as unbelievers. But as time went on, he heard the Gospel and became born again. His wife didn’t like it one bit, and she didn’t hide her feelings. She did everything to frustrate him and turn him from his newfound faith, but to no avail.
On a certain day, she deliberately refused to prepare his meal. The enemy had given her a new idea on how to “deal” with her husband: she was to serve him human waste as “rice” and urine as “stew.” She brazenly went ahead and did exactly that. She passed her own waste into the larger dish and her urine into the smaller one.
After he returned home, she set them on a tray and presented them to him. Thinking it was a proper meal, he prayed over it. By the time he opened it and saw the eyesore, he quietly closed the dishes, silently walked into his bedroom, and lay down. He spoke not a word; instead, his godly conduct did.
A very strong sense of contrition suddenly took hold of his wife. Her conscience fiercely smote her. She broke down weeping, walked into the bedroom where her husband lay, and fell on her knees. She said she was sorry for her despicable act and asked that he help her to become born again like him. Without a word of reprimand or blame, “Mr. X” led her to Christ. And that’s how she became gloriously born again!
๐๐๐NOT YOUR WORDS, BUT YOUR WALK
Our anchor scripture for today addresses wives, but its message is for husbands too.
Are you living with an unsaved spouse? The method of winning them over to the faith is not in leaving Gospel tracts at “strategic points” in the home. It’s not in keeping the radio tuned to an evangelical station that broadcasts powerful and anointed messages and music all week long. Neither is it in personally preaching endlessly “at them”! Those efforts, good as they may seem, are most likely to work in the opposite direction.
Our anchor scripture says it’s not your WORDS but your WALK that will win your unsaved spouse to the Lord in genuine and true faith! You may preach all you can, but what they see in your life could block their faith or turn it on to believe in the Savior.
What is your spouse “beholding” (seeing) in you? A “chaste conversation” (a pious and godly lifestyle) or empty religion?
๐๐๐ MAMA SARAH
1 Peter 3:6 holds up Mama Sarah as an example to emulate. Mama Sarah had no Bible, but she submitted to her husband, Abraham. Not only that, she was obedient to him and called him “My Lord”!
If Mama Sarah lived in submission to her husband and submission didn’t turn her into a chained slaveโas many modern housewives fearโthen it can never put you in bondage either. Instead, submission will exalt you and make you an exemplary and model wife, just as it did for Mama Sarah.
Are you living with an unsaved spouse? The key to winning them to the Lord is not in your TALK; it’s in your WALK! It’s in your “chaste conversation”: your practical life of godly and righteous living in the home from day to day and from week to week!
