Glory be to God, Christmas is less than 24 hours away.
As it’s usual on December 24th, the atmosphere is already supercharged with joy and excitement.
The traffic on most of the roads is several times heavier than usual. All because of Christmas.
From Facebook, I have seen video clips of the Lokoja-Abuja highway in central Nigeria. It’s so overcrowded with vehicles you wonder how the motorists and travellers are coping, especially nursing mothers and pregnant women who are trapped in the impossible jam.
May the Lord be gracious to all those who must travel at this time.
Spouses, our concern in today’s Devotional is the need to celebrate Christmas in the spirit of wisdom and self-control.
At a time like this, Spouses as leaders of their respective families must ensure that they walk in circumspection and economic wisdom. Therefore, take note of the following points.
(1) CHRISTMAS IS AN ANNUAL COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATION
First, bear in mind that Christmas is nothing more a remembrance of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Celebrating it doesn’t facilitate anyone’s going to Heaven. Neither does not celebrating it jeopardize a Believers spiritual journey.
So, know how far you go in the celebration.
(2) CELEBRATE IT WITHIN YOUR MEANS
Don’t go into debts because you want to meet up with the family next door.
Don’t have a big Christmas that leaves you indebted and unable to start the new year in financial freedom!
Just last Sunday, I heard of a couple that travelled to their village for Christmas and ended up spending more than they should. When the celebration was all over, they couldn’t return to the big city. They were forced to remain in the village for some months, disrupting their children’s education.
Don’t be foolish in the name of “enjoying Christmas”.
(3) CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF THE MEEK AND GENTLE CHRIST WITH HUMILITY
Remember that Christ was born in a cattle shed, laid in manger as his first bed, lived a humble and meek life, died on a rugged cross and was buried in a borrowed tomb.
Therefore, celebrate His birth with joy yet without needless fanfare, extravagance and pomp.
You’ll do well to remember the poor, orphans, widows and the less privileged this Christmas. Reaching out to them with monetary and other gifts, as God enables you, is another wonderful way of celebrating Christmas.
(4) CELEBRATE IN THE SPIRIT OF CONTENTMENT
Let’s all remember that the Bible commands us to be content with what we have(Hebrews 13:5). Therefore,
celebrate this year’s Christmas with what you have.
If you’re not able to buy brand-new clothes and shoes for yourself and the children this year, don’t injure yourself with anxiety and worries. Remember, there are many more Christmases in the future.
Use what you have for this year. By all means avoid going to buy things on credit to celebrate. Be content with what you have.
(5) REMEMBER, SATAN AND HIS AGENTS HUNT FOR LIVES ON CHRISTMAS DAY
Christmas day is hunting day for Satan and his agents.
Therefore, mind what you eat and where you eat.
Control your children. Don’t let them move anyhow. Warn them not to eat carelessly outside your home.
