LOVEBIRDS' DEVOTIONAL

Enriching Matrimonies

YOUR LIES IN THE BEDROOM TODAY, MAY IMPRISON YOU TOMORROW

Scripture:
‘LIE NOT ONE TO ANOTHER, SEEING THAT YE HAVE PUT OFF THE OLD MAN WITH HIS DEEDS’
(COLOSSIANS 3:9)

UPON ARRIVING EGYPT WITH A HEART HEAVY with despair, fear and trepidation, Joseph found himself on display for sale in the open slave market. There Mr Portiphar, the Captain of Egypt’s Presidential Guards purchased him.

In this man’s home, Joseph’s sterling and impeccable character endeared him to his master’s heart.

And being exceedingly handsome, his master’s wife concluded that “Captain Luck” had graciously brought her a Gigolo or a sex machine to attend to her weird amorous fantasies.

But as she found out to her chagrin, the handsome and dashing young man wasn’t just excellent in character and bodily build but saintly in heart. His firm refusal of her advances wounded her pride and being her husband’s heartthrob, she decided to lie against him(Genesis 39:16-20).

Marriage brings Spouses into a deep bond of love where it’s almost always so easy for them to believe each other hook line and sinker. In the case under review, that’s exactly what happened.

As soon as his wife lied against Joseph, all of Mr Portiphar’s trust and faith in the young man who had served him so diligently vanished into the thin air and fury and wrath instantly replaced them.

I personally think Joseph must have been given the beating of his life before being thrown into the Prison.

Dear Spouses, please listen.

Lying is a two-edged sword. It may cut your victim today and serve your selfish ends, but be sure of this: it will come for you tomorrow. Yes, it will come to finish it’s job. Because it’s job is to first wound your victim and make them weep and bleed but the next time, it will be your turn.

As Joseph was beaten and dragged into jail, Mrs Potiphar was all smiles. Her planned revenge had worked so smoothly.

Joseph swallowed everything: the lie, the beating, the refusal of his master to listen to his own side of the story and the tortuous years of imprisonment. He swallowed everything in silence. No bitterness.

Our anchor scripture has a message for couples and it’s this: do not pass lies to each other. The tendency for your spouse to believe you is very high, especially on matters as sensitive as someone trying to sleep with you. Never scandalize anyone. That’s exactly what Mrs Portiphar did.

Then one day God suddenly brought Joseph out of the Prison and made him the Prime Minister of Egypt. Suddenly the news spread like wildfire reaching every nook and cranny of Egypt. And of course, reaching Mrs Portiphar.
Can you imagine how she must have felt?

To her husband who punished Joseph heavily without verifying his wife’s accusation, he hadn’t lost just his slave but his slave had suddenly become his Boss.

But for his treacherous wife, it was worse. She suddenly found herself imprisoned in the dark dungeons of fear. What will Joseph now do against her? Will he tell Pharoah and seek justice for the lie and slander she laid against him and the consequent years, not days but YEARS, of imprisonment? What would become of her by the time her husband knew the truth: that she fabricated lies against an innocent young man that served him with all his heart?

Spouses, don’t feed each other lies.

Madam, don’t lie against your husband’s relatives who come to visit just because you don’t want them in your home. Neither lie against your house help, domestic staff, etc.

And beware of telling your Spouse that “XYZ” is eyeing you and that you “perceive” that they’re desirous of an affair with you. The outcome may be bigger than you can imagine.

The Bible is silent about what became of Mrs Portiphar. In all likelihood, she lived in dread all throughout the 80 years of Joseph’s reign. Fear, uncertainty, and a million questions must have invaded and tormented her.

Do not feed your spouse lies. The consequences could be very grave. And don’t forget this: “Old Sins Have Long Shadows”.
