IN YESTERDAY’S DEVOTIONAL PIECE, WE SAW THAT when you buy a Mobile Phone, it quickly becomes your “closest” material possession.
You, however, need to watch lest it competes in any way with your Spouse for your heart, time and attention. Or worse still, displacing and replacing them in your affection and desire! This warning becomes necessary because it has happened to people already! Some are so addicted to their mobile phone they operate them, scrolling through WhatsApp or Facebook right in Church as the Sunday Service is fully on!
There’s no doubting the fact that Mobile Phones have brought immense benefits and ease of communication but there’s the need for Spouses to be sober, self-restrained and disciplined in their use of it; so it doesn’t encroach on their tender love lives and become a hindrance to the growth of their marriage relationship.
Marriage was instituted as God’s PERMANENT answer to Man’s solitude. It’s given to provide a suitable, helpful and satisfactory human companion who is one-flesh with their Spouse. It becomes very important for Spouses to mutually guard against any Device becoming “Another Partner” or “A Third Person” in their union.
As vastly useful as your mobile phone is, you must personally ensure that it doesn’t become a companion to you.
Always be conscious of the fact that it’s a mere man-made tool or instrument. Use it to work, communicate and achieve your desired end and thereafter drop it and give time and attention to your Spouse.
And when ever your Partner begins to complain that you’re spending more time with your device and ignoring them, don’t pick offence but be rather grateful to them for calling your attention to the fact that you’re unconsciously sliding into error.
Today, we have many people who quietly slipped into this error and have now become Addicts to their Phones to the detriment of their Marriage.
After returning home from the day’s work and church activities, it’s time for your Marriage to get nourished and boosted through lively and interactive companionship. Your hearts must reach out to each other again and reconnect after your outdoor engagements for the day. So also must your mind and bodies reconnect through loving, affectionate and romantic activities and shared evening.
Marriage is a life of serving each other, giving to each other and waiting on one another. This can’t be done while you’re together in the room but seperated by phone and each one completely engrossed for hours only to be tired and sleep off without paying your dews to each other!
Our theme scripture for today is from Matthew 6
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.” (Matthew 6:24A)
It tells us that it’s impossible to serve two masters. You’ll either love one and hate the other or vice versa.
It therefore becomes important for you to know THE PERSON God commands you to LOVE as your Covenant Partner and to ensure that your allegiance, passion, affection, and commitment are zealously focused on them. Of course, that person is YOUR SPOUSE.
This Devotional piece is calling you back from the act of giving attention to your mobile phone and ignoring your husband or wife who’s right with you. It’s not only wrong but disrespectful and insolent. There are no sensational News, vital information or award-winning movies on the internet that compare with the person of your Marriage Partner. In view of this and the general health of your marriage, it’s important that you and your Mate have some mutually accepted guilding rules on how to use your mobile phones at home such that they do not erode your friendship and intimacy.
Finally, it’s important for you and your Spouse to candidly discuss the dangers of internet pornography, a great enemy of marriage which the devil has successfully smuggled into mobile phones. You must jointly forbid it and also police one another to ensure that none is lured into the deadly act of watching them secretly.
