🤎🩷🎻MORE THAN A GOOD PROVIDER.
Husbands, you are called in marriage to do far more than merely live under the same roof with your wife and be a good provider. In fact, you are not to merely love her. You are to love her exceptionally, uniquely, and supremely. Put another way, you are to be madly in love with her at all times. That is the divine standard, and that is what is meant in Proverbs 5:19. When you consider the command in Ephesians 5:25, it becomes very clear that you are called to love your wife with extraordinary love—the kind of love that is prepared to sacrifice its very life to meet the needs of its beloved. But how do you attain this lofty and ideal love?
🤎🩷🎻PURPOSE IN YOUR HEART
You attain this lofty height of love by deciding, choosing, resolving, and purposing to do so. There is nothing you cannot do if you truly set your mind to it. Solomon made up his mind to learn how to be a winebibber and also how to be a fool. He even chose to explore madness. Listen to his words: “I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.” He undertook these as a philosophical experiment to discover the lifestyle that guarantees stable and lasting happiness. Nobody is born an ardent marital lover. You learn it.
🤎🩷🎻BACKBONE OF SUCCESS Your backbone for succeeding in this is your deep-seated conviction and understanding that God demands it of you. That mindset will energise you to overlook her weaknesses and love her exceptionally. What empowered Christ to face the cross? It was His understanding that it was the Father’s perfect will: “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39b) It is not natural to embrace pain. Not even our Lord welcomed crucifixion. He wished He did not have to go to the cross, but His love for the Father and His unwavering commitment to obey Him made Him accept the cross. Similarly, it is not natural for a man to love his wife supremely as Christ loved the Church. But when a husband loves God and is committed to pleasing Him, he will gladly love his wife and go even further to cherish her, as commanded in our anchor Scripture for today.
🤎🩷🎻CHERISH HER
In our anchor Scripture, husbands are commanded to nourish and cherish their wives. However, our focus is on the command to cherish her. He is to do this just as the Lord cherishes the Church. In Isaiah 40, we see how God cherishes His people. Please read: “He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.” (Isaiah 40:11, ESV) This is how the Father loved Israel, and it is also how Jesus loves the Church. The verse says that He tends His flock like a shepherd. He gathers the young lambs in His arms and carries them in His bosom, just as a nursing mother holds her baby close to her chest. This is how husbands are to treat, handle, and tenderly care for their wives.
🤎🩷🎻BEYOND ROMANTIC LOVE, BE HER SHEPHERD
It all boils down to this: you should love your wife beyond kisses and sexual intimacy. Be a shepherd in her life. Recognise when she is weak like a lamb and needs to be carried in your arms. You may not be able to carry her physically, but your deep concern, empathy, compassion, kindness, and sensitivity can be just as meaningful as lifting her in your arms and carrying her to safety.
🤎🩷🎻CONCLUSION
There is nothing beyond your ability if you purpose to do it. It is God’s perfect will for you to love your wife ardently and passionately. There is nothing admirable about philandering or womanising. There’s everything good in a husband being committed to his marriage, passionate about his wife and always head over heels in love with her. This does not happen naturally, however. You learn it by committing yourself to it, and after a while it becomes a permanent part of who you are. Therefore, loving one’s wife passionately is a learned behaviour. You can begin learning it today.
