💜💜🧕🧕🧕💟💟Today, by God’s grace, we shall be dwelling on the letter “N” in our acronym, ISLAND. And “N” here stands for “NABALISM.”
❤️Of course, Nabalism isn’t a word you will find in standard English dictionaries. It is coined from the name of Nabal, the husband of Abigail (1 Samuel 25).
💜💜🧕🧕🧕💟💟WHO WAS NABAL?
For us to understand the term “Nabalism,” it is important for us to know who Nabal was beyond the mere fact that he was the husband of Abigail.
🧡Nabal was a stupendously rich man in the days of King Saul. In fact, we can comfortably say that he was as wealthy as Job. If he lived in our time, he would be in the class of the top multibillionaires.
🩵Unfortunately, he was a man who was bereft of character, wisdom, and godliness. Let’s hear what the Bible says about him:
📖“Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but THE MAN WAS CHURLISH AND EVIL IN HIS DOINGS; and he was of the house of Caleb.” (1 Samuel 25:3).
🤎We are told in the verse above that Nabal “was CHURLISH AND EVIL IN HIS DOINGS.”
🧡Churlish means to be rude, hostile, impolite, unfriendly, bad-tempered, and lacking basic manners or graciousness. Of course, you should already know what it implies when a man is said to be “evil in his doings.” It means he was a bad man.
💚Let’s hear about him from another source. This time, from his wife, Abigail:
📖“Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard THIS MAN OF BELIAL, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and FOLLY IS WITH HIM.” (1 Samuel 25:25).
🤎His own wife called him a “man of Belial” and further testified that folly was in him. From the testimony of his wife, he was a foolish and worthless fellow because “a man of Belial” means “a worthless person, a lawless scoundrel, and a wicked man who acts in rebellion against God and moral order.” He wasn’t just irreligious; he was vile.
💙Now, let’s hear what one of his servants said about him:
📖“FOR HE IS SUCH A SON OF BELIAL, THAT A MAN CANNOT SPEAK TO HIM.” (1 Samuel 25:17b).
🧡The half-verse above contains the words of one of Nabal’s servants to his master’s wife. It means that Nabal was so depraved that everyone knew it, and that was why his servant could directly call him “a son of Belial” to his own wife.
🩷From all that we have read thus far, it is obvious that Nabal was a good businessman, because it takes a man with a sharp economic mind to amass stupendous wealth and build a huge animal husbandry empire such as he had. However, in the area of character and human relations, Nabal was a colossal failure.
🩶He was foolish, rude, mannerless, mean, inhospitable, ungrateful, and extremely miserly. He was in the class of the worthless, wicked, or lawless scoundrels of society.
💖Worst of all, he was irreligious, even though he was a member of the house of Caleb, that great warrior and man of faith.
💜💜🧕🧕🧕💟💟WHEN A SPOUSE IS NABALITIC
In our day, an equivalent of Nabal could be the husband or wife who is highly successful in his or her chosen profession, vocation, career, or business and consequently has economic power, with hundreds of people under them or in their employment, yet when it comes to the area of character, there is nothing to write home about.
💜Sir/Ma, if you’re nabalitic, I fear for you because, unless you repent, turn to God, and believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, doom might just be ahead of you, just as it was before Nabal, even though he did not know it.
💜💜🧕🧕🧕💟💟RIDING ROUGHSHOD ON OTHERS
When a man or woman is nabalitic because they have embraced Nabalism, those around them will be the first sufferers of their wicked, mean, and harsh lifestyle, just as it was in the case of Nabal, the billionaire husband of Abigail. Abigail must have been the first partaker of his bitter character.
🩵Going by her testimony and that of one of her husband’s servants, it is obvious that Nabal dealt ruthlessly with many, but because he was rich and “untouchable,” he went scot-free.
💜💜🧕🧕🧕💟💟NABAL’S WATERLOO!
Nabal finally overstepped his bounds on the day he bared his foul and evil fangs at David by openly and without restraints insulting the future King of Israel, a young man who had done him good.
❤️Did David provoke him? No! He railed and rained insults on David for sending his young men to politely request ordinary food!
🩶In anger, David set out to destroy him, but God used Abigail to stop him so that He, God, would do it Himself (Romans 12:19).
🩷So, even though Nabal escaped David’s sword, God struck him dead just ten days later and gave his wife to David, the man he had insulted and humiliated.
💜💜🧕🧕🧕💟💟CUT OFF IN THE MIDST OF HIS DAYS
Did Nabal plan to die early? Certainly not; no one does. But his wicked character reached a point where God had to take him out.
💜💜🧕🧕🧕💟💟CONCLUSION
Nabal was from the family of Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, who, along with Joshua, brought a good report of the Promised Land when the other ten brought an evil report.
🤎It was unfortunate that his offspring, Nabal, would live in Israel, turn his back on God, and be openly known as a son of Belial. And because he turned his back on God despite the blessings of God upon his life, and instead chose to let himself be used by Belial (Satan) to afflict others, including David, the young man who saved Israel from the reproach of Goliath, God chose to sling him out into hell, just as his wife, Abigail, unknowingly prophesied:
📖“And the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.” (1 Samuel 25:29c).
💖Dear spouse, watch your character. If you’re nabalitic and riding roughshod over others, please repent and turn to Christ Jesus, lest what happened to Nabal befall you and your cherished spouse be given to the person you despise today.💜💟
