Enriching Matrimonies

EMPTYING THE HEART OF YESTERDAY’S HURTS

Scripture:
‘BUT THIS ONE THING I DO, FORGETTING THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEHIND, AND REACHING FORTH UNTO THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEFORE.’
(PHILIPPIANS 3: 13B)

🌹There are many things we make great efforts to remember, including academic subjects and precious spiritual lessons.

We sit down for hours, study, and memorize to pass exams; we meditate on the Scriptures to gain deeper spiritual knowledge and insight.

🌹A PROPENSITY FOR UNPROFITABLE MEMORIES
But what about the mundane matters, such as wrongs committed against us and other memories that God would rather we keep far from our minds? We never seem to have to make an effort to remember those. They seem to have an open door and constant access to our thoughts, often causing us to become unloving, unlovely, and bitter.

In our anchor scripture for today, the Apostle Paul provides us with a powerful spiritual key to progress and victory in life—and especially in marriage. That key is this: forgetting those things which lie behind and reaching forward to your glorious future.

🌹THE WEIGHT OF THE PAST
Today, many marriages are stalled because one spouse is still clinging to the painful memories of hurts inflicted by their partner years ago. Let’s face the facts: certain painful incidents or betrayals are not easy to forget. I remember meeting a man years ago in Ibadan who told me, with visible pain on his face, that while he was serving a prison sentence, his wife had been unfaithful. I met another man whose wife committed adultery, and he felt utterly unable to break free from the cycle of painful memories.

🌹WALKING IN HIS FOOTSTEPS
Dearly beloved, we were created to walk in the footsteps of God, our Creator. The Bible says:
“If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.” (Psalm 130:3-4)
God does not keep a ledger of our sins to brood over them. He forgives and forgets, and so should we.

🌹MOVING FORWARD
Husbands and wives, it is time to bury the wounds of yesterday. Stop dwelling on the mistakes your spouse has made. The truth is simple: you cannot look backward and move forward at the same time. Empty your heart of every thought of vengeance. Forgive your mate for the wrongs committed against you and return to the path of love. As you do, peace will return to your relationship, and your union will be transformed.
