Enriching Matrimonies

LESSONS FROM JOB AND HIS WIFE

Scripture:
‘AS WE HAVE THEREFORE OPPORTUNITY, LET US DO GOOD UNTO ALL MEN, ESPECIALLY UNTO THEM WHO ARE OF THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH.’
(GALATIANS 6: 10)

Job and his wife were an exceedingly rich couple. If they lived in our day, they would easily be referred to as a multi-billionaire couple. In fact, the Bible makes it clear that they were the wealthiest couple in the entire Eastern hemisphere.

Job 1:3 records his wealth as follows: “He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys.” In the agrarian era of their time, these were stupendously massive economic assets.

LESSON FROM MR & MRS JOB
There are precious lessons all married couples can learn from the lives of Job and his wife. Here are some:

1. HUMILITY IN PROSPERITY
The first lesson is that they did not let their wealth go to their heads. They refused to let riches make them arrogant or insensitive.
Despite their enormous wealth, they remained God-fearing, upright, and spiritual.

If you and your spouse are blessed with riches, do not let your possessions make you proud. Always remember that God is the wellspring of all true wealth; it is He who gives you the power to obtain it (Deuteronomy 8:18).

2. THE PURPOSE OF PROSPERITY
The second lesson is that they understood the true purpose of abundance. They knew that prosperity is for more than just personal comfort; they understood that prosperity is for generosity. They used their God-given resources to alleviate the suffering of others and to break the chains of unrighteousness.

HOW THEY DEPLOYED THEIR WEALTH:
* DELIVERING THE NEEDY: They rescued the poor, the orphans, and the destitute: “Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him” (Job 29:12).

* RESTORING THE BROKEN:
They revived the health of the sick and turned around the fortunes of widows: “The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy” (Job 29:13).

* SUPPORTING THE DISABLED: They ministered to the physically challenged: “I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame” (Job 29:15).

* FOSTERING THE INDIGENT: They acted as foster parents to those in poverty, moving them from lack into the warmth of provision: “I was a father to the poor” (Job 29:16a).

* FIGHTING INJUSTICE: They probed into cases of oppression to rescue victims. “And the cause which I knew not I searched out. And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth” (Job 29:16b-17).

CONCLUSION
Marriage is for much more than having unforgettable romantic times. God has made you a team that can reach beyond the comfort of your own home to make a difference in the lives of those weeping invisible tears.

If God has blessed you and your spouse financially, walk in the footsteps of Mr and Mrs Job. Use your resources to give the widow a reason to sing and to set the oppressed free.
