🔥🔥🔥 I was just nine years old in Christ when the news of the sexual scandals involving highly respected and internationally famous preachers rocked the world like the Hiroshima bomb explosions. My cry at the time was, “Where were their wives that other women could walk into their husbands’ bosoms and cheaply bring them down?” But today, I know better.
🔥🔥🔥SPOUSES AS WATCHDOGS
It takes both husband and wife being watchdogs over their marriage for it to be safe and strong. The wife alone cannot do the job, neither can the husband alone. And the job is not one to be done once in a long while. No! It is a job they must do daily. They must move away from the traditional, laid-back, and casual practice of marriage and embrace a romantically vibrant and sexually proactive matrimonial lifestyle.
🔥🔥🔥THE COST OF A SEXUAL SCANDAL
Most Christian couples have read our anchor scripture again and again, and all they see in the word “fornication” is the sexual misbehaviour of young people. But that verse is fully addressed to YOU who are married. And the fullness of its message is that you must proactively avoid sexual infidelity and the gargantuan and far-reaching scandal it generates.
🔥🔥🔥SIT DOWN FOR ONCE AND CONSIDER THE COSTS!
There is a need for all spouses to sit down from time to time and consider the costs of a sexual scandal. Personalise your calculations and think: “Should any of us slip into a sexual scandal, what will happen to our reputation, marriage, family, children, ministry, and so on?” If you both think soberly, you will be shocked at what you realise. Yet, that might just be the tip of the iceberg.
🔥🔥🔥A SEXUAL SCANDAL GOES BEYOND YOU
And when a husband is a preacher, that is all the more reason he should quadruple his efforts to ensure that his marriage is always in top form and that nothing ever brings him into contact with Jezebels; for a scandal is worse for a clergyman than a hangman’s noose.
The sexual scandals of the 1980s and 1990s dealt devastating blows to evangelical and Pentecostal Christianity globally, especially in the USA. Because of those scandals, great men and ministries that took God decades to build and establish came crashing down overnight. And the devil and his people had a field day laughing at the Church.
🔥🔥🔥A WAKE-UP CALL!!!
So then, what is our focus this morning? It is to wake all Christian spouses up to the need to be romantically and sexually proactive in response to the command of our anchor scripture.
It is your duty to actively avoid falling into a sexual scandal, and our anchor scripture makes it clear what to do! It is not to pray tons of prayers or proceed on a one-month retreat to some high mountain. The way to avoid falling into a moral scandal is to maintain constant and intense sexual intimacy with your spouse. Why? Because just one scandal is all the devil needs to reduce your worth to that of a mere slice of bread (Proverbs 6:26). And if it takes you and your spouse agreeing on daily sexual intimacy to avoid slipping into a sexual scandal, would you not do it?
🔥🔥🔥UNDERSTANDING
If you understand that a slip into sexual sin will not only affect you, but will also have ripple effects that will backfire on Christians in your denomination and others, you will most definitely choose to be romantically proactive in your marriage in order to save yourself and the Body of Christ from the negative effects of sexual scandals.
