FIGHTING WIVES

Scripture:
‘IT IS BETTER TO DWELL IN A CORNER OF THE HOUSETOP, THAN WITH A BRAWLING WOMAN IN A WIDE HOUSE.’
(PROVERBS 21: 9)

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„Very many times, when people hear about fights in homesโ€”also known as domestic violenceโ€”their thoughts instantly race to the husbands. Why? Because, most of the time, it is husbands who are the monstrous wife-batterers and fiendish domestic villains. However, the Bible lets us know that there are wives who beat their husbands.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„WE MUST REVEAL THE TRUTH
Our anchor Scripture for today reveals this and calls such a wife a brawling woman. The reference is so direct, and the words used to express it are perfectly apt and appropriate. This is no surprise because God never covers the truth. He reveals it for the good of His people.
Similarly, it is the duty of the Church to reveal these truths, for it is the house of God, “the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15).

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„A BRAWLING WOMAN
To know who a brawling woman is, let us first understand what a brawl is.
What is a brawl? A brawl is a rough, noisy, and uncontrolled fight. This means that a brawler is a rough, noisy, brutish, and uncontrollable fighter.
When you look at the definition of a brawler as presented above, what kind of people easily come to your mind? Of course, your mind readily conjures up images of cultists, gangsters, thugs, and rabble-rousers. All this means that a brawling woman is a thug-like, violent fighter who punches, hits, strikes, and batters her husband violently, roughly, and aggressivelyโ€”and without shame.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„SUFFERING IN SILENCE
Because of the deep stigma and shame associated with a husband being beaten by his wife, virtually all husbands who go through such experiences in their marriages keep quiet and suffer in silence. But God’s Word is not silent on this dark and well-concealed aspect of some marriages. Therefore, we are examining it today.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„A TRUE-LIFE STORY
Read this true-life account of a husbandโ€”a high-ranking law enforcement officerโ€”who suffered at the hands of his wife, a brawling woman:
“Our next-door neighbour, Mr X, was tall and slim, while his wife was tall and very huge. Each time they had a fight, Mrs X would be the one shouting, ‘Ele lelele,’ but it would be the man who came out limping and looking the worse for the fight.
One day, we heard her shouting as usual, and our daddy made up his mind to intervene and put a stop to the wife battery. Daddy was shocked to discover the opposite. The woman, in her full glory, was seated on top of the man, punching him like a rag doll. He was groaning in pain while she kept shouting, ‘Ele lelele,’ and beating the life out of her husband.
Daddy managed to drag the woman off the man. He was shocked by what he had witnessed. The man confirmed that his wife made a habit of beating him every week, even without provocation.
From that day onward, we did not hear any more fights because Daddy warned the woman to desist from beating her husband while pretending to be the victim.
In summary, the man did not last; he later died.”

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„BORN TO LEAD
You see, men are born to lead, and so they come into the world with a masculine ego. This ego is different from egocentrism, haughtiness, or pride. It is that masculine confidence and self-esteem that form a core part of a man’s identity.
One thing that brutally devastates this positive ego is the humiliation of being physically beaten by his own wife.
Of course, it is perfectly wrong and completely inexcusable for a husband to beat his wife. But the case of a wife beating her own husband is even worse. Its equivalent is the case of a son raping his mother. When a father rapes his daughter, it is a loathsome evil. But an incident of a son raping his own mother is far more heinous and vile. That is how desecrating it is for a wife to beat her husband, particularly when it becomes habitual, as was the case with Mrs X in the true-life account above.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„THE COUNSEL OF RELOCATING TO THE HOUSETOP
Does it then come as a surprise that our anchor Scripture declares that it is better for a husband living with a brawling wife to relocate to the lonely and exposed housetop than remain with her inside the comfort of the home?
Consider what eventually happened to Mr X in the true-life account. He did not last. The frustration of being pummeled, beaten, and battered weekly by his own wife took its toll, and he eventually died before his time.
A woman can also beat, batter, and wound her husband without ever laying a hand on him. She can frustrate him through constant nagging, quarrelling, bickerings (Proverbs 21:19), and sexual deprivation until, one day, he capitulates to death. I know of a fine and handsome Christian gentleman who died young because of intense frustration and prolonged sexual deprivation from his heartless wife.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„NO WOMAN PAYS THE DOWRY ON HER HUSBAND
As we all know, it is the man who marries the woman. It is the man who pays a dowry on his wife. Once he does, the woman drops her father’s name and bears her husband’s name.
It all boils down to one thing: the man is the head of the woman and never the other way around. So, when a wife beats her husband, whatever her reason, she is in gross transgression. It is even worse because her daughters are likely to follow her example and humiliate their own husbands.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„EVALUATING THE COUNSEL OF SCRIPTURE
Is the counsel of our anchor Scripture extreme? No. Let us not forget that it was written under the inspiration of the Spirit of God, and the human vessel used to pen it was King Solomon, a man whom God filled with divine wisdom.
The verse does not tell the man to forsake the marriage or divorce his wife. Rather, it counsels him to sacrifice his comfort, remove himself from the toxic presence of his wife, and stay on the housetop for peace of mind, rest, and sanity while the marriage continues.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„LESSON FOR “FIGHTER JETS”
Our anchor Scripture is saying to wives: when you fight your husband, you are silently driving him away from your beauty, companionship, charm, allure, sex appeal, attractiveness, and indeed everything that drew him to you in the first place.

๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ„CONCLUSION
In yesterday’s devotional, we saw that whether you are a husband or a wife, fighting your spouse could put you behind bars. That is a warning to every brawling woman reading this devotional who thinks it is a demonstration of strength to beat her husband. That man may suddenly die in your hands. And once that happens, the consequences can be truly tragic.๐ŸŒ„
