🧡🧡🧡🤎🤎“That’s your mother; listen to her!” he said in a loud voice from a distance after asking about the welfare of my wife and children.
💛I heard him very well, but I didn’t understand how my wife could be my mother. There was, however, something I couldn’t shake off: he was a sincere man. He had been our Head Boy, or Senior Prefect, in secondary school when I was only in Form Three. He was married and had a stable marriage. So, I couldn’t simply throw his advice, shouted from a distance, away as trash.
🩷By the time Maximum Marriage Ministries began in 2001 and I started teaching marriage, I noted our anchor Scripture for today, wherein Adam, long ago, after their tragic fall into sin and even before the birth of Cain, named his wife Eve for a reason he felt was important enough for him to give her that specific name. What was the reason? It was that she was the mother of all the living. Adam didn’t confer a title upon her, neither did he give her an award for meritorious service spanning years. He simply gave her a name that expressed her reality and identity.
💚The question becomes: How did Adam know that Eve was the mother of all the living? Who told him? The answer is simple: he knew it by inspiration, just as he knew that she was created from him and, through inspiration, called her Woman.
🧡🧡🧡🤎🤎THE DIVINE MARK
Do you know that for all the time Adam lived and served God by dressing and keeping the Garden of Eden, he was not bestowed with the divine words of blessing? We have no idea how long Adam existed alone, but the truth is that it was not until Eve was created that he was blessed along with her(Genesis 1:28).
💜And for as long as his wife hadn’t come, his duties were more or less domestic chores: ridding the garden of weeds and ensuring that no intruder came into it.
🩵It was when “the mother of all the living” came into his life that God released the real assignments He had for him and her: to subdue the earth, replenish it, and exercise dominion over all the creatures on the earth.
💖This tells you how God Himself saw and still sees women. They are major players in His assignments on the earth.
🧡🧡🧡🤎🤎MOTHER? YES, MOTHER!
If the very first man realised by inspiration that the woman, despite the fact that she was instrumental to his fall, was nonetheless the mother of all living things, then we cannot but agree with him.
🧡🧡🧡🤎🤎THE SPIRIT OF MOTHERHOOD
Adam’s conclusion about Eve’s position as “the Mother” didn’t stem from fear, an inferiority complex, or flattery. He experienced her as indeed the Mother.
🩷Once Eve came into his life, the ambience of the garden changed. Femininity bloomed and boomed throughout the garden. The singing voice of a woman became a feature of the formerly quieter horticultural landscape.
💙She came in with ideas that transformed his feeding. She took hold of the garden’s firestones and started the art of cooking to Adam’s delight and he no longer ate only fruits. Her presence brought the touch of care, motherly affection, concern, and those special traits that only a woman can demonstrate.
🩶She fed the birds, gave the leftovers of their food to the dogs, and Adam watched and concluded that indeed she was the mother of all the living, and that included even himself.
🧡🧡🧡🤎🤎WHEN ANOTHER MOTHER CAME
In Genesis 24, the Bible tells us:
📖“And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.” (Genesis 24:67).
🧡For three whole years, Isaac, the billionaire son of Father Abraham, somehow could not shake off the pain of the absence of his late mother, Sarah. His father was alive; in their household were literally hundreds of servants; he was wealthy enough to afford any convenience that money could purchase; he was not in his teens but a full-grown man of forty. Yet, he was disconsolate because a mother was missing!
🤎But once Rebekah, his wife, appeared in his life, the mysterious mist and fog of dejection quickly dissipated and vanished into thin air forever, and we are told: “and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.”
💚How? What had happened?
💖Another mother had come in the person of his wife, Rebekah.
🧡🧡🧡🤎🤎YOUR WIFE IS YOUR “MOTHER”
If Adam, the grand patriarch of humanity, was sane and humble enough to acknowledge the mother status of Eve, then no husband should feel too big to recognise his wife as the mother of his family realm.
💛When a husband acknowledges his wife as “the mother of all the living” in his family including himself, he will be motivated to treat her with respect. He will accord her honour and dignity. He will regard her, listen to her, and use her advice when they are good.
💙He will not raise a hand to beat her, as no one beats his mother except accursed persons.
💚Recognising the wife as the mother of everyone in his home and family, and treating her with respect, will also motivate the wife to be of good conduct in the home and to submit willingly to his authority, since honour begets honour.
🧡🧡🧡🤎🤎CONCLUSION
Looking back, I can see that my former school Senior Prefect was right after all, even though he didn’t open the pages of Scripture.
🩵Dear husbands, treat your wife as “the mother of all the living” in your house, and you’ll find that she’ll also joyfully defer to your authority, submit to you in everything, and reverence you as she ought.🧡🤎
